SAC Meeting at UP Regulatory Commission-05Aug2024

"Reduction in electricity rates for the next five years: President Upbhokta Parishad and Saur Vidyut Upbhokta, Lucknow Strongly Raises Issue", In a meeting of the State Advisory Committee held on Monday, the President, Vidyut Upbhokta Parishad, Avadhesh Kumar Verma, opposed the suggestion of Power Corporation's Managing Director Pankaj Kumar to increase electricity rates. He argued that Noida Power Company has been providing a 10% reduction in rates for two years in lieu of surplus funds of Rs 1081 crore from consumers. Therefore, all power distribution companies should also reduce electricity rates. He stated that the gap of Rs 11203 crore shown by the power companies is only for display. According to the Multi-Year Tariff Regulation standards, this gap will be eliminated upon examination. The surplus funds of consumers with power companies are approximately Rs 13337 crore as of 2017-18, Rs 6507 crore in 2021-22, and Rs 7988 crore in 2023-24. Adding other gaps, the total surplus is Rs 33,122 crore. Under the Tariff Policy, instead of increasing rates, the Regulatory Commission should order a reduction of 40% at once or 8% per annum for the next five years. Dr. Bharat Raj, a member of the State Advisory Committee, also supported the Vidyut Upbhokta Parishad's proposal for a reduction in electricity rates. He also raised the issue of Solar & Other Renewable Energy harnessing and net metering issues. Raja Pillai, Chairman of the Smart Grid Forum, raised the issue of timely payments. Sushil Kumar, Managing Director of UP Metro, raised the issue of reducing metro electricity rates. After the hearing, the Chairman of the Regulatory Commission assured that a decision would be made soon. The meeting was attended by Narendra Bhushan, Additional Chief Secretary, Energy Department, Ajay Kumar Shukla, Secretary, Urban Development Department, Bhawani Singh, Managing Director, Madhyanchal, Anupam Shukla, Director, UPNEDA, Rahul Singh, Special Secretary, IT Department, and TK Shivu, Special Secretary, Agriculture Department, among others.
